In a landmark move aimed at revitalising the natural diamond market in China, the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and GET-Diamonds (GET) have announced a strategic collaboration with the Shanghai Diamond Exchange (SDE) to launch a new e-commerce marketplace exclusively for natural diamonds.

The SDE, China’s sole authorised diamond import and export channel, will host the platform designed to enhance transparency, confidence, and global access to the Chinese diamond trade. The initiative marks a significant step toward reaffirming China’s status as one of the world’s top diamond jewellery markets.

While China’s diamond market experienced rapid growth in the early 2000s, reaching around US$7 billion in annual sales by 2020, it later declined to US$5.7 billion by 2024, overtaken by India. Analysts attribute this slowdown to competition from lab-grown diamonds and shifting consumer preferences. However, with the lab-grown segment facing steep price corrections and falling consumer confidence, interest in natural diamonds — prized for their rarity and value — is resurging.

Yoram Dvash of the WFDB said, “This is good news for the Chinese market and great for suppliers of polished natural diamonds globally who may previously have found it difficult to enter the Chinese market.”

Lin Qiang of the Shanghai Diamond Exchange added, “This deal helps our members to trade freely amongst themselves and source polished goods from India and beyond. At a time of global uncertainty, the efforts of GET-Diamonds and the WFDB are highly positive.”

The collaboration will be officially launched at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai from November 5–10, 2025. The platform connects over 1.5 million natural diamonds from 1,200+ trusted suppliers, offering members exclusive tools, real-time market data, and global reach — solidifying a new era of digitally connected diamond trading.
