Among the highlights of the sale will be a rare 36-carat fine-quality ruby, a standout gemstone expected to draw intense interest from global buyers.
The auction will mark the debut of rubies sourced in meaningful quantities from a new section of Gemfields’ Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) concession in Mozambique. This area, which had not previously contributed significantly to Gemfields’ auctions, is already yielding gems with distinctive characteristics—most notably, a lighter tone and stronger fluorescence. These traits, attributed to lower iron content, provide an opportunity for buyers to diversify their palette of ruby hues.
MRM, located in the Montepuez district of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, is situated on one of the world’s most important recently discovered ruby deposits. The licence area spans nearly 35,000 hectares and is operated by Gemfields, which holds a 75% stake. The remaining 25% is owned by Mwiriti Limitada, a Mozambican company.
Adrian Banks, Managing Director for Product and Sales at Gemfields, expressed his enthusiasm about the evolving production. “It is exciting to see the evolving variety of rubies being recovered by Montepuez Ruby Mining. I am particularly eager to see how a single fine-quality ruby weighing 36 carats will perform at our auction,” he said. “I believe this ruby will be strongly contested by discerning clients who recognise the rarity and significance of such a gemstone, given both its size and quality.”
Gemfields has become a trusted name in the coloured gemstone industry, known for its consistent and transparent auction platform. The proceeds from each auction are fully repatriated to Mozambique, underlining the company’s commitment to ethical sourcing and responsible practices.
Looking ahead, Gemfields is set to complete a new 400-tonne-per-hour ore processing plant, which will triple MRM’s throughput capacity. This expansion is expected to bolster Gemfields’ ability to meet rising market demand by ensuring a steady supply of Mozambican rubies across a broad quality spectrum.
