The 40th Annual Awards ceremony hosted by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) at the Jamshedji Bhaba (JB) Theatre, NCPA, Nariman Point, Mumbai saw an impressive turn out of the crème da le crème of the gleaming industry of gems and jewellery industry along with prominent names from the social and political circle. The awards ceremony took place on a Saturday evening on October 5th, 2013, which ensured an extensive turn out. The ceremony holds a very high repute and importance in the industry as it awards the best and sets a higher benchmark, guiding the industry towards betterment.
Shri Kapil Sibal, Hon'ble Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology & Law and Justice said, “I am proud to be here as this industry is truly world class in all aspects. Even though India does not mine its own diamonds, it is still number one in the world when it comes to cutting and polishing. All 14 diamonds of every 15 that are set in jewellery all over the globe are cut and polished in India. It accounts of 42 billion US $ exports and employs over 3.5 million workers in India. It is indeed one of the most important driving sectors of Indian economy. The demand for diamond and jewellery can only rise because as they say, ‘A Diamond is forever’. The diamonds remind me of politics in some ways. The diamond takes millions of years to turn into a valuable product from a black coal. The tectonic plates work for millions of years to produce it. The black coal goes through tremendous amount of pressure and temperature to convert itself in a diamond. To be a diamond certainly needs a lot of hard work. It is the same way in politics. It is not easy to be the best in small amount of time. Anybody who is trying to sell you dreams should know that selling dreams does not make diamonds. One needs to understand that our democracy is young and we cannot expect it to be as successful as the U.S. or European countries’ democracy as they have hundreds of years of history of democracy. India needs to start appreciating its achievements till now and remember its past stories of victory. And, the gems and jewellery industry is India’s great success story.”
