diamond world news service

The De Beers' Finsch mine located in the Northern Cape Province has set a record, as the only mine to claim the six-million fatality free shift milestone in South Africa. The award was handed over to the mine's Operation Manager, Gerhard van Niekerk by Northern Cape Principal Inspector of Mines Ms. Enid Babuseng.

De Beers Consolidated Mines Managing Director David Noko noted: “A safety culture in mining requires continuous and visible commitment, and leadership from the top with health and safety being a priority in management responsibility. Visible leadership in safety needs to be exercised at all levels of an operation and in a company, as well as in all roles.” According to De Beers, the Finsch mine has not reported any fatality during its operations over the past 11 years.
