Two Chinese nationals were taken in custody at Suvarnabhumi airport on Septemeber 10 i.e. Thursday in connection with the theft of a 10-million-baht diamond from a jewellery fair being held at Impact Muang Thong Thani, says a report.

The report further says that an exhibitor at the fair had earlier told Pak Kret police that a man and a woman, who appeared to be Chinese, had switched a fake diamond for a genuine 6 carats stone worth around 10 million baht on the first day of the fair. The pair's passports identified the man as He Ying, 30, and the woman as, Jing Su Lian, 30.

According to the reports, a man and a woman inquired to a salesman at M Tarun Co about the price of a diamond on display and asked to look at it about 11.30 am on Thursday. After a brief discussion and a quick examination of the stone the couple gave the diamond back to the sales assistant and left. When the sales assistant examined the stone they gave her, realised it was a fake and told the fair organiser. A review of security camera footage showed the suspects had left the fair by taxi. Police informed immigration officers about the suspects and provided them with images taken from the video footage. Immigration police later detained a Chinese couple who looked like the pair in the video images. The suspects denied stealing the diamond, saying they were tourists visiting Thailand and were about to return home. Police did not find the stolen diamond on them.

At the time of reporting, the stone was reportedly found as informed by Somchai Phornchindarak, president of TGJTA.
