Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee presented the first jewellery collection from his multi-year collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) during New York Fashion Week on September 15.
The jewellery was showcased alongside the designer’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection, Bengal Byzantine Broadway, marking his return to the New York Fashion Week calendar after 18 years.
The first chapter of the collaboration draws from The Met’s collection spanning more than 5,000 years of art and culture, with references to Byzantine, Greek and Roman, Medieval and Islamic art. These historical influences have been interpreted through Indian jewellery-making techniques.
The collection comprises more than 100 pieces crafted in 18-karat and 22-karat gold. Gemstones including tourmaline, spinel, amethyst and lapis lazuli feature across pendants, cuffs, rings and other jewellery.
Supermodel Christy Turlington opened the 72-look runway presentation wearing pieces from the collection, including the Pantokrator pendant, a multicoloured gemstone necklace, gold cuff and earrings.
The Pantokrator pendant features 18-karat and 22-karat gold and a combination of coloured gemstones. Other pieces in the collaboration draw on historical objects and motifs from The Met’s collections.
The jewellery collection extends Sabyasachi’s existing presence in the international luxury market, with the new pieces to be offered through the brand’s retail network following the New York presentation.
