Gem Scan Laboratories come to India

Gem Scan Laboratories (GSL) opened its doors to and Indian public on January 16, 2006 in Panchratna, Opera House. The occasion was graced by Mary Fort, Zale Corporation's CEO and the senior management. Also present on the occasion were Russel Mehta of Rosy Blue, Amar Kothari of Inter Gold, Alkesh Shah of Gold Star, Nirupa Bhatt of Rio Tinto and others from the industry like Livingstones, C. Mahindra, Jai Diamonds, etc. A cocktail reception was held the following day on January 17 to celebrate the successful opening of the Lab which will be fully functional from March 1, 2006.

Zale Corporation and GS Lab have a good partnership. "We met them because they do business with our brand in Canada. They were doing business with our people for many years. So we got to know them," says Mary Fort as she congratulates the GSLab team on their success.

Mary also revealed Zale's plans for U.S.A, "We are staying with our core businesses and making sure they are on the right track. We are repositioning the Zale brand. We need some more time to do that but once that gets done we'll get on from there to really take it to the next level- Taking up the quality a bit, taking up the design a bit, merchandizing of the jewellery, reaching out to different customers, creating a day in day out business totally," says Mary. Zale doesn't have India on its target list as yet but as Mary puts it, "We never say never. Anything is possible but not in short term." "Zale Corporation's CEO and the upper management of Zale gracing this ceremony itself is a testimony for our service and standards. At this time we like to tell the Indian jewellery industry and the Indian public that we will provide the same quality of service we are known for in the past 21 years," said Sam Barbuzzi, Co-owner of GS Laboratories. Being the only well known lab with ISO 9001 in Canada and the U.S., GSL promises to bring the same services to the Indian market.

India is emerging as an international trading centre and GSL international clients like Zale, Walmart, etc. are all increasingly buying diamonds from India. GSL will serve them at source while they can also avail the services at other locations like Toronto and Dallas. GSL India is a complete branch of the international parent company. The Lab scores over others where quality of service and turn around time of the jewellery or diamond is concerned. It is completely computerized and accuracy is preserved, saving a lot on time. The turnaround time the lab currently promises is 3 working days. It will offer the Indian clients all services that one can expect from a world-class gemmological laboratory.

"We keep our standards to the highest possible level. Other than regular 4Cs for the diamond we are also offering the report for scintillation or brilliance of the diamond. In other words this would certify the diamond's cut," adds Barbuzzi. One of the most important services for the jewellery manufacturers will be the branding. GSL assists them in the branding of the jewellery and helps their goods to stand out in the market. Unlike most other grading labs GSL does both 4Cs and scintillation of the diamond with new Fire Trace machinery. They offer various different products ranging from full certificate to credit card certificate. "We hope Indian public will definitely benefit from what we offer here. We will maintain the standards and quality of excellence that we have been known for, for years together," says Andrew Tatarsky, Co-owner of GS Laboratories in U.S.A.

The gemmologists working at the new Indian branch are recruited from India but trained by the parent company in Dallas, USA. The gemmologists carry degrees from Belgium, USA or GIA India. When branding for the manufacturers is combined with GSL's reputed services it's certain to make them unique among the other grading labs, it is claimed.
