Panna Diamond has received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, giving the natural diamonds produced in Panna, Madhya Pradesh, formal recognition under India’s GI registration system.

The GI registration is listed under Application No. 1097, with the Collectorate (Diamond Branch), District Panna, Madhya Pradesh, as the applicant. The registration falls under Class 14 and covers natural goods. The application was filed on June 7, 2023.

The GI registration became available in the GI Journal on July 9, 2025, while the registration certificate was issued on November 10, 2025, according to the official Geographical Indications Registry.

The recognition identifies Panna Diamond with its geographical origin and provides a formal framework for protecting the name and identity associated with diamonds from the region.

Panna is India’s established diamond-producing district, with the state government conducting auctions for diamonds recovered from shallow diamond mines in the district. The district administration continues to oversee the sale of diamonds obtained from these mines.

The GI recognition could provide greater differentiation for Panna-origin natural diamonds in the domestic market and strengthen the region’s identity within India’s diamond trade.

For the diamond industry, the registration also places Panna’s locally sourced natural diamonds within India’s growing portfolio of GI-recognised products, linking geographical origin with product identity and traceability.
