Vasant Mehta, former Chairman of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), passed away at the age of 81. He was born in 1945.
Mehta served as GJEPC Chairman from 2008 to 2010 and as Vice Chairman during 1991–92 and 2006–08. He also held the role of Convenor for the Banking, Insurance and Taxation Committee, and for Promotion, Marketing & Business Development (PMBD).
During his tenure, Mehta represented industry concerns before the Commerce Ministry, DGFT, RBI, ECGC and banks, particularly during a difficult period for exporters. He served as a part-time Director on the Board of the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation (ECGC) of India.
At the global level, Mehta was Vice President of the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) and represented the Indian diamond industry at the World Diamond Council (WDC), World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), IDMA, CIBJO and the Kimberley Process. He played a role in establishing the Kimberley Process and in developing anti-money laundering (AML) compliance frameworks for India.
GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali said, "Vasanthai was a visionary leader whose wisdom, integrity and deep commitment to the industry have left an enduring legacy. His guidance strengthened India's position in the global diamond trade and inspired generations of industry professionals."
