Russia Retains Top Spot as World's Largest Diamond Producer in 2024: Kimberley Process

Despite ongoing sanctions from the G7, Russia held its position as the world’s leading rough diamond producer in 2024—both by volume and by value—according to newly released data from the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme

Russia accounted for 32% of global rough diamond production by volume, translating to 37.3 million carats. In terms of value, the country contributed 29% of global output, totalling $3.335 billion.

Botswana followed closely, producing 28.2 million carats (24% of global volume) and nearly matching Russia in value with $3.308 billion (28.8% of global output).

The report also revealed a 10% decline in overall global rough diamond output, which dropped to $11.48 billion in 2024.

India emerged as the largest importer of rough diamonds, commanding 40% of global imports by volume and 39% by value. The UAE ranked second, importing 29% by volume and 24% by value.

The data underscores the continued dominance of traditional diamond powerhouses even amidst geopolitical and market disruptions.
