The Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 opened in Mumbai on May 11 under India’s Chairship, convening representatives from KP Participants, Observers, industry bodies and civil society organizations.

The four-day meeting, running until May 14, will focus on issues related to the implementation of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), including monitoring and compliance systems, artisanal and alluvial diamond production, trade statistics and measures to strengthen trust in the natural diamond pipeline.

Addressing delegates, KP Chair 2026 Shri Suchindra Misra said the Kimberley Process has contributed to supporting peace, protecting livelihoods and strengthening legitimate diamond trade in producing countries.

He said, “The Kimberley Process continues to remain one of the most progressive certification systems globally,” while stressing the importance of strengthening cooperation among Participants and ensuring the system remains effective in a changing global environment.

The discussions are also expected to address emerging challenges facing the natural diamond sector and collaborative approaches to improve consumer confidence in ethically sourced diamonds.

Participants in the meeting include senior officials from the Department of Commerce, Government of India, representatives from the World Diamond Council, Civil Society Coalition members and other industry stakeholders.

India assumed the Chairship of the Kimberley Process on January 1, 2026. Its Chairship agenda is centred on the 3Cs — credibility, compliance and consumer confidence — with emphasis on responsible sourcing, transparency and sustainability in the natural diamond trade.

Established under United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/56 in 2000, the Kimberley Process currently includes 60 Participants representing 86 countries, with the European Union participating as a single bloc.
