AngloGold Ashantis mine - Moab Khutsong mine, was considered unsafe by the South African government, and the company has been asked to close the shaft at the mine. The safety of the mine was questioned after two people died in a rock fall incident occurring due to a seismic tremor.

AngloGold spokesperson, Alan Fine informed that operations were halted, while the mine would be studied by senior officials from the department of minerals and energy for safety standards. The ministry was uncertain as to how long the shaft would remain closed.

Alan Fine, added that the company was holding talks with government officials and unions and, After that we hope to be up and running again soon,.

The Moab Khutsong mine is as of now in its developing stage and recorded a production of 14,000 ounces of gold in the first quarter of 2007.
