Breakthrough arrests made in Brussels diamond robbery

In a breakthrough in investigations into the diamond robbery at Brussels Airport that took place on February 18th 2013, as 31 people were arrested in Belgium, France and Switzerland, as per Belgian authorities. The Belgian police released a statement on May 8, 2013, in which it noted that, “Immediately after the robbery, cooperation was set up between the Federal judicial authorities of the Brussels and Asse regions. Furthermore, the authorities in France, Switzerland and Luxemburg were closely involved in the investigation. One suspect was arrested in France yesterday. He is suspected to be one of the robbers and has been involved in several, severe crimes in France. Belgian authorities have requested his extradition.

In addition Swiss authorities have arrested six individuals. This morning, 250 police officers (200 FJP and 50 special forces) executed 40 raids, mostly in and around the Brussels area. During these raids, 24 individuals were arrested. Approximately ten of them are known to be involved in the Brussels criminal scene. The arrested are all between 30 and 50 years old. During the raids, several items were seized.

In Switzerland, authorities found diamonds, some which are confirmed to have been part of the stolen parcels. In Belgium, up until now, the seized goods predominantly concern large amounts of cash. The investigation is still ongoing.”
