De Beers settles wage dispute with SA Mineworkers Union

De Beers said on Friday it had agreed to improve wages and employment conditions at its South African mines following a wage dispute with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

De Beers said on Friday it had agreed to improve wages and employment conditions at its South African mines following a wage dispute with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

The agreement includes an increase in monthly pensionable wages and a new minimum wage from May 2005.

In a joint statement, Peter Bailey, chief negotiator of the NUM said: �The union is satisfied with the agreement reached after difficult and protracted negotiations.
