India’s polished diamond exports drop 35% in April

The month of April reflected a decrease in India’s polished diamond trade, both in terms of exports and imports. The country’s polished diamond exports dropped in value by 35 percent (on y-o-y basis) to $1.334 billion and in volume terms the same dropped 55 percent to 2.251 million carats. Imports of polished diamonds decreased 76 percent to $355.4 million in value and by 68 percent in volume to 1.188 million carats.

The net polished exports, (valued as excess of exports over imports), increased 82 ‎percent to $978.8 million.

The country’s rough diamond exports rose 21 percent to $115.3 million and imports rose 20 percent to $1.581 billion. The country’s net rough imports increased 20 percent to $1.466 billion.

The activities in April caused the country’s April net diamond account (valued as total of polished and rough exports less the total of ‎polished and rough imports) to be at a deficit of $486.7 million (the same was at a deficit of ‎‎$680.4 million in April 2011).
