A larger participation than its previous editions, and optimism amongst exhibitors marked the opening of the 8th Gem & Jewellery India International Exhibition (GJIIE) on February, 22, 2012 in Chennai. The event is slated until February 26, 2012 and is organised by Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchant Association (MJDMA) and UBM India.

This year the GJIIE is hosting 225 companies, which more than doubled over the last three years. Shamal Pote, UBM India says that they expect around 12,000 visitors to participate in the show. Also, the show dates have been extended from three to four days, allowing better buying opportunities. Exhibitors are expecting business to be good at the show, and the venue – Chennai gives better opportunities as it is a key market for gold jewellery.

H.M. Sultan, Secretary of MJDMA noted that participant interest in the event has been growing over the years, with a lot many companies who could not make it to the show floor this year. This has prompted considering expanding the show next year, to accommodate atleast around 50 additional companies.

The 8th GJIIE was inaugurated at the hands of Mr. K. Rosaiah, Governor of Tamil Nadu. Jayantilal Chalani, Chairman of MJDMA delivered the inaugural speech and Vinod Hayagriv was the special guest for the occasion.
