Pink diamonds of this type gain their highly desirable color as a result of a rare, naturally-occurring slippage of the crystallographic lattice in the stone during its formation within the earth’s crust. Only a few mines in the world produce pink diamond rough, and of the stones that are cut and polished, only one in about 10 million diamonds will possess a color pure enough to be graded as “Fancy Vivid”.
Pink diamonds have featured often in Christie’s auction - The Perfect Pink (14.23-carat, fancy intense pink rectangular-cut diamond) was sold for $23.2 million - a record price for any jewel sold at an auction in Asia; The Vivid Pink - a 5-carat fancy vivid pink, internally flawless diamond sold for $10.8 million; a 6.89-carat fancy vivid purple-pink diamond sold for $6.9 million; The Rose of Dubai - A Fancy Pink internally-flawless diamond of 25.02 cts sold for US$ 6,008,000. Likewise, the 10.09-carat pink diamond is expected to sell at an impressive price.
