IGI to Certify Roseco Lab Grown Moissanite

diamond world news service

The International Gemological Institute (IGI), the world’s largest independent gemological laboratory, will issue grading reports for moissanite from Dallas based Roseco Inc. IGI Certificates of Authenticity will verify that the material is lab-grown moissanite, stating the gemstone’s shape, weight and colorless characteristics. Certificates will accompany all shapes in weights from 0.50 – 5.00 carats. This program is designed as a consumer protection initiative, analyzing and clearly identifying Roseco’s product as an increasing number of synthetics, simulants and counterfeits come to market.

“There are a lot of different gemstone and jewelry options on the market, which is great, but it can also be confusing,” noted IGI North American President Avi Levy. “Our laboratory analysis and verification will help retailers and consumers be assured of the authenticity and quality of the Roseco moissanite they are selling and buying.”

Roseco will offer IGI certified loose moissanite in most shapes and sizes, as well as finished stud earrings, solitaire rings and solitaire pendant jewelry. The gemstones are colorless and include a limited lifetime warranty.

French scientist Henri Moissan first discovered natural moissanite near a meteor crater in Arizona in 1893. Scientists perfected the process of growing moissanite in a lab in the 1950s and the gemstone quickly grew in popularity. The material has a higher refractive index (RI) than diamond at 2.69 (compared to 2.42). On the Mohs hardness scale moissanite ranks between 9.25 to 9.50, exceeding sapphires and rubies, coming nearer diamond’s 10.
