The tanzanite mines in Tanzania were flooded with heavy rains, reports say, leaving more than 80 miners either missing or dead. Although rescue operations are on, the teams say there are dim chances of any survivors due to the excessive water collection. Most of the victims were small-scale artisanal miners, according to Ami Mpungwe, deputy chairman of Tanzanite One. Mine owners said that nearly 87 people were underground when the flash floods hit.
