The Indian diamond industry has always been the frontrunner for the social causes. One more time, the industry has proved that they are not only one of the leading revenue additions to the country but are also the sensitive lot, who never shy away from doing their bit for the society.

Yesterday, on 20th October 2016, Bharat Diamond Bourse had invited all 19 families whose sons were martyred in the Uri attack. The families received financial help from the diamond traders and jewellery community. Cheques of Rs. 10 lakh each were handed over to the family members at the hands of Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. A total sum of Rs. 1.9 crore was distributed.

CM Devendra Fadnavis during his speech appreciated the humble efforts of the diamond industry. He said “I must say that you are not only the leading contributors to the country’s revenue, the foremost contributors to the country’s merchandise exports (almost 14 per cent) but are also the most sensitive industry who has come forth to help the martyr’s families.”

Praveenshankar Pandya, Chairman of GJEPC and Gem and Jewellery National Relief Foundation (GJNRF), said, "Right from the time of the Kargil war, we have initiated several welfare activities for our armed forces. This time also, we tied up with local regiments from north India, Bihar and Maharashtra to bring these jawans to Mumbai. We would like to assure the families that you are not alone but the entire country’s support is with you. By sacrificing your sons for the country, you have done a great service to the country.”

On the occasion, CM also inaugurated state-of-the-art data centre at BDB in Mumbai.
