At least seven illegal miners were killed and several more feared dead after parts of a mine collapsed in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo. An underground gallery in the Bakwanga mining complex had collapsed leaving dozens of miners trapped underground.

Due to the illegal nature of the miner's activities, police were uncertain as to how many were in the mine at the time or how many were killed. The mining complex at Bakwanga has become a haven for illegal diggers, who
work the galleries once they are abandoned by mine owners.
