The IIJS Signature Show opened today in Mumbai with the unveiling of Diamond Trails, an ambitious project blending fine art, literature, and philanthropy, conceptualised by globally acclaimed jewellery designer and artist Reena Ahluwalia. The initiative, supported by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), explores the symbolic depth of natural diamonds through five original stories and five meticulously crafted diamond paintings — all created to inspire both personal reflection and collective impact within the industry.

At the core of Diamond Trails lies collaboration. Ahluwalia brought together a collective of distinguished contributors, including diamond analyst, creator, consultant, and publisher Avi Krawitz; Shanoo Bijlani, Editor of Solitaire International at GJEPC; Grant Mobley, Jewellery & Watch Editor at the Natural Diamond Council; and jewellery content specialist and consultant Sonia Esther Soltani. Each writer has crafted a unique story inspired by natural diamonds, visually interpreted through Ahluwalia’s paintings, which took over 1,000 hours to complete.

“We constantly speak about the compelling stories diamonds can tell — their journey below and above ground, the lives they touch, and the joy they bring,” said Krawitz. “That typically translates into a marketing script. What an exciting prospect this was then, to tell the diamond story in such an innovative way, working with creative talents I’ve long admired.”

The project not only reimagines diamonds as cultural symbols but also channels the art’s impact towards philanthropy. Each of the five paintings on display at Booth Jio-K19 at JWCC during the IIJS Signature Show is for sale, with proceeds dedicated to charitable causes. “Now is the time to make an impact that matters,” Ahluwalia emphasised. “Our industry has an incredible pool of journalistic talent. I sought contributors who have proven their mettle through years of exceptional work, making immense contributions to our industry.”

The emotional resonance of the works is undeniable, with stories exploring themes of love, transformation, and legacy. “The idea of Reena transforming my words into a stunning piece of art was exciting, but seeing the finished work left me speechless,” said Mobley. “She captured the essence of my story with such beauty and creativity — it’s an experience I’m incredibly proud to be part of.”

Soltani added, “The themes of everlasting connection and the legacy of diamonds were a natural fit for me. Reena’s visual interpretation truly captured the heart of my narrative, amplifying the depth and meaning behind each word.”

Vipul Shah, Chairman of GJEPC, highlighted why the council chose to support this initiative: “Diamond Trails celebrates the unity of art, storytelling, and philanthropy, presenting diamonds not just as objects of luxury but as cultural touchpoints. We are proud to host this groundbreaking initiative, which perfectly aligns with our mission to drive positive change in the industry.”

Ahluwalia describes the project as a “mission of impact” and a call for collaboration within the global diamond community. “This is not just about beautiful objects — it’s about the stories we carry and the collective change we can inspire,” she said. “With Diamond Trails, I wanted to create something lasting and meaningful. We’ve only just begun — together, we have work to do.”

The exhibit can be viewed at IIJS Signature from January 4th to 7th, 2025, at Booth Jio-K19 at JWCC, Mumbai. Further details, including how to purchase the artworks and support the charitable efforts, can be found at diamond-trails.com.
