The Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 concluded in Mumbai under India’s Chairship after four days of deliberations involving KP Participants, Observers, industry representatives and civil society organizations.
The meeting was held under India’s Chairship theme of the 3Cs — Credibility, Compliance and Consumer Confidence — with discussions centred on strengthening governance, operational efficiency and transparency in the natural diamond trade.
Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said India, as one of the world’s leading diamond cutting and polishing centres, recognizes the Kimberley Process as a key mechanism in ensuring natural diamonds continue to represent trust and responsible sourcing.
Goyal said India remains committed to strengthening the Kimberley Process framework and advancing the 3Cs agenda in collaboration with Participants and stakeholders across the global diamond industry.
“The natural diamond sector sustains millions of livelihoods across producing, processing and consuming nations, and India will continue to champion a KP that is robust, transparent and responsive to both industry and consumer expectations,” he said.
Working Groups and Committees during the Intersessional discussed monitoring systems, governance reforms, technical procedures, statistical reporting and artisanal production. Discussions also focused on improving operational mechanisms and reinforcing transparency throughout the natural diamond value chain.
KP Chair 2026 Suchindra Misra said the progress made during the Mumbai Intersessional reflected a collective commitment towards keeping the Kimberley Process relevant amid changing global trade dynamics and evolving consumer expectations.
He said trust remains fundamental to the natural diamond sector and highlighted the need to reinforce the Kimberley Process as a framework supporting responsible sourcing, transparency and confidence across the supply chain.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of stronger communication and outreach initiatives to better communicate the impact of responsible sourcing, development outcomes and livelihood support associated with the Kimberley Process.
Kirit Bhansali, Chairman of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, said discussions on compliance mechanisms, artisanal production and supply chain transparency were important to ensuring the Kimberley Process remains aligned with changing market expectations, including sustainability and digital verification requirements.
“Natural diamonds represent a sustainable product and livelihood for millions, and the Kimberley Process continues to be one of the most progressive certification systems globally,” Bhansali said.
The discussions from the Mumbai Intersessional will continue at the KP Plenary scheduled to take place in New Delhi later this year under India’s 2026 Chairship.
