Mumbai/New York: The Consulate General of India in New York, together with the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), hosted the India-USA Virtual Exhibition on Gems & Jewellery on 23 October 2026. The digital platform connected Indian exporters directly with American buyers.
The inaugural session opened with welcome remarks from Ambassador Binaya S. Pradhan, Consul General of India in New York. Kirit Bhansali, Chairman, GJEPC, delivered the inaugural address, and Rajlakshmi Kadam, Consul (Trade), Consulate General of India, New York, gave the closing remarks.
Thirty-five Indian companies took part, many of them MSMEs. They presented jewellery collections to US buyers and explored direct business partnerships.
Speaking at the event, Bhansali underlined the weight of the US market. It accounted for about 30% of India’s gem and jewellery exports in FY2024-25, worth nearly US$10 billion. Tariff uncertainty took a toll, with exports to the US falling by over 44% between April and December 2025.
Recovery is now underway. From April to September 2026, exports to the US rose almost 6% year-on-year to nearly US$3 billion, against US$2.77 billion in the same period of 2025.
Bhansali also spoke of the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, hoping it brings clarity and predictability for exporters and buyers once the terms are finalised.
With the US holiday season around the corner, followed by Valentine’s Day and retailers’ 2027 sourcing plans, he urged American buyers to look at India’s manufacturing strengths across diamonds, coloured gemstones and gold jewellery. He also encouraged them to engage directly with the participating MSMEs, citing their skill, flexibility and ability to meet varied sourcing needs.
