The decision marks a significant pivot towards prioritising natural diamonds and reinforces Antwerp’s standing as a global epicentre for natural diamond trade.

HRD Antwerp, a leading diamond grading laboratory and a subsidiary of the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), has been at the forefront of diamond certification since 1973. With this development, it becomes the first major international lab to formally exit the commercial certification of synthetic diamonds.

“This is a deliberate and strategic decision,” said Ellen Joncheere, CEO of HRD Antwerp. “From 2026 onwards, we will no longer provide quality grading reports for loose synthetic diamonds intended for commercial purposes. Exceptions may be made in rare cases for research, but the focus of our work will firmly return to the natural diamond segment. However, jewellery pieces containing synthetic stones will still be eligible for certification.”

The move is being hailed by HRD Antwerp’s parent organisation, the AWDC, as a historic and bold step. Karen Rentmeesters, CEO of the AWDC, emphasised the importance of maintaining a clear boundary between natural and lab-grown stones.

“HRD Antwerp is setting a precedent globally,” Rentmeesters said. “By committing exclusively to natural diamonds, the lab is helping to restore clarity and trust in the market. Consumers deserve transparency, and this decision strengthens the natural diamond value chain at a critical time for the industry.”

The announcement comes amid growing tensions in the trade regarding the coexistence of natural and lab-grown diamonds. While LGDs have gained popularity due to affordability and perceived sustainability, many in the natural diamond sector argue that consumer confidence is being diluted by a lack of clear differentiation.

By taking a definitive stance, HRD Antwerp is reaffirming its role not just as a certifying body, but as a guardian of the natural diamond legacy.
