The All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), the apex body representing over six lakh gem and jewellery businesses across India, has issued a strong call urging the domestic industry to halt all trade with Turkey and Azerbaijan. The appeal aligns with national sentiment following recent geopolitical developments and underscores the Council's support for Operation Sindoor.
The move comes in response to Turkey’s public endorsement of Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 Indian lives. Azerbaijan has also drawn criticism for similar pro-Pakistan positions, prompting concerns over national security and ethical trade conduct.
Rajesh Rokde, Chairman of GJC, stated, "The Indian gem and jewellery sector stands united in support of the nation. It is imperative that our industry sets a strong example by prioritizing the country over commerce. We call upon every jeweller, manufacturer, trader, and wholesaler to stop all transactions with Turkey and Azerbaijan."
He added that this collective stand reflects the industry's commitment to national interests, solidarity during Operation Sindoor, and its role as a symbol of India’s pride and resilience.
Vice Chairman Avinash Gupta echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that trade must be rooted in principle, not just profit. "By standing firm in our resolve to halt transactions with Turkey and Azerbaijan, we demonstrate that our commitment to the nation surpasses commercial interests," he said. He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and lauded the Indian armed forces for their unwavering courage.
The GJC’s announcement follows reports highlighting India’s contribution to Turkey’s economy through tourism, including destination weddings and hospitality spending. The Council’s call adds momentum to broader appeals for reassessing economic and cultural ties with nations seen as taking anti-India positions.
Reaffirming its stance, the GJC has pledged continued guidance to its members in aligning trade with national priorities and called on the industry to act in unity to safeguard India’s sovereignty and economic integrity.
