The African Diamond Producers Association (ADPA) has expressed support for India’s appointment as Chair of the Kimberley Process (KP) for 2026, taking a position that differs from views earlier voiced by the African Diamond Council (ADC).
In a formal statement, ADPA congratulated India on assuming the KP chairmanship and highlighted India’s status as an ADPA Observer country since 2025. The association stated that its member states intend to engage constructively with India during its tenure.
“ADPA member states are committed to working closely with India during its chairmanship to further strengthen the KP,” the statement said.
ADPA reiterated its continued backing of the Kimberley Process, describing it as the only United Nations–mandated certification mechanism governing the international trade in rough diamonds. The association emphasised that the KP remains anchored in its tripartite structure of government, industry and civil society participation.
“The African Diamond Producers Association, empowered by its member states, reaffirms its unwavering commitment and support to the KP,” ADPA added.
Established on November 4, 2006, through the Luanda Declaration, ADPA is an intergovernmental organisation headquartered in Luanda, Angola. It represents major African diamond-producing countries and works to safeguard their collective interests within the global diamond value chain.
The International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) has echoed and amplified ADPA’s statement, lending further industry support to India’s KP chairmanship and reinforcing confidence in the continued relevance of the Kimberley Process for rough diamond trade governance.
