55 ct. Kimberley Diamond to make its first exhibit

The 55-carat Kimberley Diamond is going on display for the very first time. It will be exhibited this month in the Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

The diamond is champagne-colored and carries a historical significance as it was discovered in the 19th century at the Kimberley Mine in South Africa. The mine referred to as “the Big Hole,” was one of the first diamond mines of the modern era, reports add. At the time of its discovery, the Kimberley Diamond was a 490 ct. crystal, which further was cut into a 70 ct. stone and finally acquired its current emerald cut.

The stone has been taken on loan from the Bruce F. Stuart Trust, and the display in the Morgan Memorial Hall of Gems will be through June 2014, reports suggest.
