India firm to stop fake KP certificates

India, in its present status as chair of the KP Scheme, opined that if the Kimberley Process Certificate Scheme (KPCS) was to be successful, the free flow of fake Kimberley Process Certificates must be stopped. The Scheme was set up in 2003 to eradicate trade of conflict diamonds.

Indian Commerce Secretary G.K. Pillai, while addressing a semi-annual conference on the Kimberley Process Certificate Scheme (KPCS) mentioned that, “We must find solution to the problem of fake KP certificates. It undermines the very core of what KPCS wants to achieve. The problem must be addressed”. The country feels its responsibility towards the issue, being a contributor of 60 percent share of the world's polished diamonds by value and 82 percent by volume.
