The 29th HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show unfolded on 16th February with a record number of exhibitors – over 3,100 exhibitors from 48 countries and exhibitors from Argentina, Denmark and Myanmar showcasing for the first time. The event features more than a dozen product zones.

Adding to the mix are more than 6,500 buyers from 87 buying missions, representing companies from 75 countries and regions. They include: Brazil’s Amsterdam Sauer, Ann-Louise Jewellers from Canada, the Chinese mainland’s Gems and Jewelry Trade Association of China, Nouveaux Bijoutiers from France, Russia’s Jewelux, South Africa’s Truworths, Grand Stores from the United Arab Emirates and Ben Bridge Jeweler from the United States.

Lawrence Ma , chairman HKTDC says “expectations by the exhibitors were low this time so according to that the first two days have turned out well. There was an increase on the first day then last year in the visitor count. Also, the Jewellery sales on Chinese new year and in the past few months in China were alright. There could be a slight correction of may be 5 percent in the goods but that's normal in every business.

Although the effects of the general slowdown have not worn off completely, yet there seems some positive mood as the year has just begun and buyers have yet to reach their peak of stocks.

DiamondWorld reports that movement in the jewellery section was slow on the first day, although it is too early to comment and the coming days are expected to be good. The diamond pavilion reported good movement of buyers in hall 3. Exhibitors seemed positive and are hoping to finish off well.

Speaking to DiamondWorld Aaron Shum from Aaron Shum Jewellery said that “It's an excellent show, at least 20percent better”, although he observed the shift in low cost Jewellery as the metal prices are getting dearer.

The fair is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), and co-organised by the Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Association, the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association, the Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers' Association and the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China. It closes on 20th February 2012.
