The Kimberely Process Intersessional Meeting which concluded in Israel yesterday, failed to reach a consensus on the KP minimum standards implementation in the Marange diamond fields in Zimbabwe, which was the key issue on its agenda over the last few days.

There was much discussion on KP Monitor Abbey Chikane’s recommendations that the country should be allowed to export rough diamonds, the continued implementation of the KP Work Plan which was decided at the KP Plenary Meeting in 2009, arrest of NGO activist Farai Mguwu by the Zimbabwean authorities and the Zimbabwe court’s denial for his bail. However despite KP Chair, Boaz Hirsch extending discussions for a day, a common viewpoint could not be arrived at.

“This situation is unprecedented in the Kimberley Process meeting," said Hirsch, declaring an impasse. He however added that "all parties are committed to further engagement”.

The chair has suggested a mini-summit of the KP major stakeholders be convened within the WDC Annual Meeting on July 14th-15th, in St. Petersburg.

Israel will host the Plenary meeting in Jerusalem between the 1st and 4th of November of this year.

kson said prior to boarding his aircraft to Zimbabwe. “I landed in Israel to advocate for expansion of the current definition of a blood or conflict diamond,” he said. “While KP spends the next three days pretending to sort out their issues, I shall insist on the release of Farai Maguwu and I am also hoping that Zimbabwe follows my recommendation to sell their diamonds on the world market, with or without the approval of the KP,” Jackson added.

While Farai Maguwu, a Zimbabwean human rights activist continues to remain under arrest in Zimbabwe, World Diamond Council (WDC) front-man, Eli Izhakoff and chosen Kimberley Process (KP) collaborator, Mr. Boaz Hirsch wined and dined in Israel over the last three days. In contrast, former WDC member, Martin Rapaport launched a 4-day hunger strike during the KP meetings in protest of their activities to legitimize blood and conflict diamonds through by issuing KP certificates. Dr. André A. Jackson, the African Diamond Council’s (ADC) chairman is also unsatisfied with KP’s unwillingness to be decisive on the issue. During his abrupt stopover in Ramat Gan, Jackson compellingly voiced his disapproval of KP through an official press release. “The WDC hopes to buy more time during this meeting and I have come to the conclusion that this assembly will prove to be fruitless when it comes to implementing an ample solution to this blood/conflict diamond situation we have in Zimbabwe,” Jac
