Every year, diamond and jewellery shows in Hong Kong are considered to be setting the sentiment for the upcoming season. After quite a lull period in Asia, especially in India (read demonetization drive that brought the gems and jewellery industry to a standstill), the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show and HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show witnessed good turnout this year. The industry has been looking for a promising start for the trade and the twin shows seem to have a given a pretty exciting start to the upcoming season, especially in terms of demand for diamonds and jewellery from Far East.

As far as diamond industry is concerned, 1 to 2 carats goods have seen increased demand while star (small diamonds0 and -11 have seen encouraging demand from China. However, demand for melee is still weak. A number of Indian retailers were seen on the shop floor buying fancy shaped diamonds, 2-4 carat goods. The shop floor witnessed a good mix of traders and retailers.

Following rough prices going up in the last Sight and polished prices not following the suit, the buyers are the show were asking for better discounts. Dealers were of the view that the show would be the point to get good demand for polished goods as the retailers would be stocking up after the holiday season, especially Christmas and Chinese New Year seasons.

In regards to gemstones, emerald, tanzanite, sapphires have received good demand while semi-precious too has seen upward demand.

The 4th edition of HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show which is closing today i.e. 4th March. The show is being held at the AsiaWorld-Expo, while the 34th HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show is being held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from 2 to 6 March. The twin shows are said to be gathering a record of about 4,480 exhibitors from 53 countries and regions.
