Dinesh Lakhani, Director (Global Sales) of Kiran Gems Pvt. Ltd.,leads marketing, strategy, and global sales and distribution of loose diamonds in the company. Lakhani delved deep into every aspect of the diamond manufacturing pipeline and learnt everything there is to learn about diamonds. He began at the tender age of 17 and soon became proficient in every single process of diamond manufacturing, from assortment, mapping, planning, cleaving, bruting, sawing to diamond polishing, grading and to finally, selling the goods. It would hence be befitting to say that he is the Master of All when it comes to the diamond business.

To understand the financial aspect of the company and to be able to make projections for the future, he underwent leadership, management as well as sales training. With all the formal learning, Lakhani also felt that it was important to take the guidance and mentorship from his predecessors in the family, who brought plenty of experience and wisdom to the table.

One can say that he is a born leader armed with problem solving skills and a drive to be the change – his need for constant upgradation through observation, learning and training has kept complacency out of the picture, which is also a main reason why Kiran Gems is a key player in the diamond trade today.

Recalling his early days in the family business, he says: “When I joined the family business, there were only four key individuals. At that time, the setup was small yet I wanted the business to have a professional structure. So, I studied the economy of potential countries, did thorough market research of existing markets and other industries for a year before setting-up offices there.”

The clarity and gusto with which he started out was very clear – he wanted his entity to become world famous and make India proud and so it did. “I appointed a few professionals and started branching them out abroad and gave them all the required freedom and support. For instance - after identifying the growing potential in China, I appointed a local distributor in Shenzhen. As a result, Kiran now has a wider customer base and also, higher sales number there,” he adds.
