In response to the ongoing slowdown in the global diamond trade, the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI) has announced the formation of a Diamond Task Force (DTF) aimed at revitalising Surat’s gem and jewellery sector. Spearheaded by Indian Diamond Institute chairman Dinesh Navadiya, the task force will focus on expanding international demand, encouraging innovation, and enhancing industry capabilities.
The newly formed DTF has been set up with a broad mandate to drive holistic development across the city’s diamond ecosystem. Its focus areas include skill development, smart manufacturing, import-export facilitation, and expanding into new international markets. The task force also aims to strengthen Surat’s brand identity and global visibility through strategic marketing and outreach.
To this end, SGCCI plans to organise at least 10 high-impact events during the year, including large-format exhibitions on the scale of the India Jewellery Show, global buyer-seller meets, roadshows, and fashion showcases. Award ceremonies will also be part of the calendar to recognise excellence within the industry.
The task force is expected to play a crucial role in bridging gaps in technical training by launching short-term courses and workshops focused on diamond cutting and polishing, jewellery design, gemology, and advanced processing techniques. It also plans to support international delegations to key mining hubs and explore export opportunities for both natural and lab-grown diamonds.
With Surat known globally for producing some of the finest jewellery with minimal wastage, the task force will also help amplify the city’s capabilities in lab-grown diamond manufacturing, positioning it as a global hub for sustainable and precision-crafted gems.
The DTF launch meeting brought together representatives from leading industry bodies including the Surat Diamond Association (SDA), Lab-Grown Diamond Association (LGDA), Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), Surat Jewellery Manufacturers Association, Surat Diamond Bourse, and various local jewellers’ and bullion associations.
