Madagascar Discovers 300kg Emerald Rock Hidden in Presidential Palace, Plans State Auction

A 300kg emerald rock — one of the world’s largest — found concealed in Madagascar’s presidential palace since 2009 will now be sold for the state treasury amid political transition and economic crisis.

Madagascar’s new administration has uncovered one of the world’s largest emerald-bearing rocks — an estimated 300kg specimen — hidden inside the Ambohitsorohitra State Palace in Antananarivo. The discovery follows the ousting of former president Andry Rajoelina in a military coup last month, bringing renewed scrutiny to the assets held during his tenure.

According to officials, the emerald rock had been stored within the palace since 2009. In its raw form, the material comprises natural host rock embedded with emerald crystals, making it an item of significant geological and commercial interest. The government has indicated that the stone will likely be sold on behalf of the state treasury to help reduce national debt, with over 70% of the population currently living below the poverty line.

Newly appointed president Michael Randrianirina stated, “We don’t know why it was hidden here, but we are simply glad to show that we are ready to live with transparency,” underscoring the administration’s efforts to restore public trust.

The gemstone’s emergence adds another layer to the political turbulence following weeks of protests that culminated in Rajoelina’s removal, and highlights the need for stronger governance around high-value natural resources.
