Gold seizure at Mumbai International Airport totals to 405 kg

Gold seizure at the Mumbai International Airport has jumped seven-fold during April to July this year, according to data released by the Indian Customs Department.

The Customs department has seized 405 kg of gold during the first four months of the current fiscal, says a report. During the corresponding four-month period last fiscal the total of 62 kilograms of gold was seized. Also, taking into account, nearly 107 kilograms of gold seized during the current month, the total gold seizures have now exceeded 500 kilograms, adds report.

The report further states that the Customs officials recovered 11.4 kilograms of gold worth nearly Rs 3 crore in three separate incidents yesterday. Two foreign nationals and two Indian passengers found allegedly involved in the smuggling act were arrested. Upon interrogation, the accused revealed that they had attempted to smuggle gold so that they could sell it at higher price in India.
