India's G&J imports increase by 7.3%

India's gem and jewellery imports for the period April 2008-January 2009 saw an increase of 7.30 percent amounting to $ 15876.98 million, from $14796.65 million in April 2007-January 2008. Imports of cut and polished dimaonds increased by 40.18 percent amounting to $5844.21 million, from $4169.08 million in the same period of the previous year. Imports of rough dimaonds declined by 13.12 percent amounting to $7080.44 million from $8149.92 million in April 2007-January 2008. Gold bar imports increased by 11.21 percent to $2048.76 million, while in the same period last year the figures were $1842.26 million.

In the month of January 2009, imports of polished diamonds dipped by 8.3 percent amounting to $482.34 million. While the country's exports of polished diamonds in the month amounted to $730.43 million, causing India's net polished diamond trade to be worth $248.09 million.
