Sotheby's Hong Kong earns $13.7 mn for a 88ct oval diamond

The diamond was the top lot amidst 200 jewels and gems in Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite auction that was held yesterday

The type II a flawless D colour diamond was christened 'Manami Star' by a Japanese private collector who won the bid for a whopping $13.7 million. 

"The diamond takes its place in the roster of top white diamonds to have come to the market here at Sotheby’s Asia,” said Patti Wong, Sotheby’s chairman in Asia. “Three clients from the region competed for the stone – testament to the strong demand for diamonds of this quality in this part of the world," she continued.

Amidst an array of 200 items were white diamonds, fancy coloured diamonds, heritage jewels, priceless gems, etc. More than 1/3rd of the lots  didnt find any buyers. 

The diamond was cut from a 242 ct rough stone that was discovered in the Jwaneng mine in Botswana owned by De Beers and the government of Botswana and known for producing high quality roughs.
