Sotheby's breaks record at December sale

Generates $49.8 million; a record for jewellery sale by an auction house

Sotheby's has cracked a record at its December Magnificent Jewels auction sale held recently in New York. The auction generated a sale value of $49.8 million, the highest till date for a jewellery sale in an auction house. Sotheby's sold some unique pieces including the Kelly and Calvin Klein's natural pearl collection which was estimated at $3.1 million but bought for $4.8 million.

Some other pieces included a single-strand necklace embedded in natural pearls and diamonds sold for $3.6 million, while a pair of Harry Winston diamond pendant earrings were bought for $4 million. Another special piece sold was the Cartier FDR Victory Clock which generated $1.6 million.
