Welcome move!
The trade and proliferation of conflict diamonds has always been a matter of grave concern worldwide, and in India as well. With the Central government making membership of Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) mandatory for getting the Kimberley Process Certificate for import and export of rough diamonds into India, it is hoped that the diamond trade will become more ethical and transparent.

The onus is now on GJEPC, as it is the designated importing and exporting authority of India for the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS). KPCS is an international certification scheme that regulates trade in rough diamonds and prevents the flow of conflict diamonds, while helping to protect legitimate trade in rough diamonds.

GJEPC now has to regulate its members in terms of complying with the Kimberley Process certification norms. This aligns with the recent liberalisation of government policies in the way of making self-declaration by trade as compliance, instead of vetting by government departments, and is a welcome move.
