India Strikes Gold
On Monday, the Steel and Mines Minister of Odisha, Prafulla Mallik, announced in the state parliament that gold reserves have been discovered in multiple locations within three districts of Odisha: Deogarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

Currently, India has three operational gold mines - the Hutti and Uti mines in Karnataka, and the Hirabuddini mines in Jharkhand - which produce approximately 1.6 tonnes of gold annually, while the country consumes around 774 tonnes of gold per year.

This discovery is particularly significant for India, as the government has been actively seeking ways to increase gold production in response to rising demand and prices.

The mines in Odisha play a crucial role in India's economy and global trade.

It is anticipated that by 2031, the mining operations in Odisha will help to double steel production in India, resulting in a contribution of approximately 2.1 percent to the nation's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Over the next decade, this share is expected to increase even further and exceed three percent.
