Colour in the Radar
It’s been seventeen years since Ben Affleck proposed to Jennifer Lopez with a 6.10ct intense pink, radiant cut engagement ring; they have since moved on with their lives treading in different directions but they have set off a cult following for fancy coloured diamonds, especially pink, which is very much alive even today.

From the vivid pink 5ct cushion cut that sold at Christie’s HK auction for $11 million in 2009, a $ 18 million 9ct pear shaped fancy vivid that sold in 2016 to a 15 ct fancy vivid pink that sold for $32 million in 2017; there is a record-breaking FCD that makes for a headline every year and let us not forget the Pink Legacy that was sold in Christie’s Geneva last year.

The demand for these rare stones have picked up as witnessed in international trade shows like the twin show in Hong Kong and the recently concluded Baselworld. The twin blue diamonds are said to fetch $8 million in Christie’s New York auction in April.

While the production of fancy colour diamonds are dwindling especially with the lifespan of Argyle mine coming to an end, the curiosity and awareness about these stones are more vibrant than ever.
