Bidding for the right things!
The highly anticipated Christie’s ‘Maharajas and Mughal Magnificence’ auction took place this week and left audiences agape with the staggering amounts collectors and jewellers were willing to shell out for these famed jewels. Several royal artefacts fetched princely sums thanks to their storied heritage and superior quality gemstones.

A Belle Époque diamond Cartier brooch fetched an unbelievable sum of $10,603,500 making it the highest priced item that went under the hammer. However, it is interesting to note that this piece has little to do with Maharajas or Mughals.

The Kimberley Process Intersessional Conference began its 5 day meet in Mumbai this week. Delegates from 83 diamond producing and manufacturing countries reaffirmed their dedication to promote conflict free diamonds and discussed various practices for artisanal mining and its benefits.

The 4C’s of diamond should have a 5th C that stands for ‘Conflict-free’ and 5P’s of diamond marketing should include a P for Peace. The disparity between diamond-rough producing countries and those where they are marketed as final commodities in jewellery or otherwise is staggering.

We hope the stakeholders in the diamond value chain grab this opportune moment to do their bit to say no to conflict diamonds – after all, everybody has a role to play!
