A Week of Discoveries
The FCRF released a report this week stating that the world’s diamond mines are rapidly depleting. The last diamonds will be unearthed in the next 60 years – which means within a quarter of a century, some of the biggest mines will cease to operate. Should we be worried? Perhaps, but at the end of every tunnel, there is light or should we say diamond in this context?

The report also suggests that the affluent class will continue to grow at a rapid pace and the demand for diamonds is expected to rise. This week has also witnessed the discovery of a few humungous diamonds. Lucapa uncovered a 128 carat diamond along with a 7.5 carat fancy purple pink gem from the Lulo alluvial mine in Angola.

Almost 1500 km away, Lucara recovered a 223 carat, high white gem diamond from its Karowe Diamond Mine. An extremely high quality 13.33-carat pink diamond was recovered at the Gem Diamonds’ Letšeng Mine. Lastly, an extremely rare, 88.2ct oval diamond is estimated to be sold at the Sotheby’s auction in Hong Kong for $12.7 million. Exceptional white diamonds with flawless clarity in huge carat sizes seem to be flying off the shelves in various auctions, which only tells us that the demand for diamonds amidst the discerning audience is still very much there.

We should definitely work towards making the diamond industry future-proof, but that doesn’t mean we should lose hope in this sparkly, lustrous, miracle of a stone today.
