U.S Fish and Wildlife and JVC to present seminar at AGTA Gemfair

Industry members will be explained the complex rules for compliantly incorporating protected materials into jewelry, in a seminar conducted by representatives of U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Cecilia Gardner, President & CEO of JVC, and Sara Yood, Assistant General Counsel JVC. The seminar is entitled “Managing the Menagerie: Compliant Use of Wildlife and Plant Products in Jewelry”.

US Fish and Wildlife agents will describe the regulations that industry members must know and answer questions. The seminar will address queries like:-Do you use animal wildlife or plant based products in your jewelry? Are there import restrictions? With new sting-ray trends proliferating the marketplace – what regulations, if any, apply to the use of stingray? Can ivory be sold legally? What about coral, abalone and tortoiseshell? What documents do I need to import and export goods with these materials in them?

The laws surrounding the trade in protected materials being vast, will be explained by JVC and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The organizations will explain how to comply with the restrictions on trade and U.S. Customs requirements for protected materials that are used in jewelry, which animal and plant products are “endangered” or “threatened,” and how to import them legally for use in jewelry. Additionally, JVC’s latest publication, The Essential Guide to The U.S. Trade in Materials From Plant and Wildlife Products which focuses on materials used in jewelry that have been classified by international, federal, and/or state laws as “endangered” or “threatened”, will be made available.

The seminar is slated on February 8, 2013 at the AGTA Gemfair.
