US E-commerce May Touch $1 Trillion In 2022

US online transactions could cross the trillion-dollar mark for the first time ever in 2022, according to the Adobe Digital Economy Index, a real-time barometer of the digital economy by Adobe Analytics.

Adobe notes that within the 12-month pandemic period from March 2020 to February 2021, a total of $844 billion was spent online, a 20% increase.

Future growth is expected to build off of this gain, with 2021 achieving between $850 billion and $930 billion in online sales, and 2022 expected to be the first trillion-dollar year for e-commerce, the company predicts.

Adobe Analytics data indicates that the first two months (January-February) of 2021 saw consumers spend $121 billion online, a 34% percent growth year over year.

Retailers also posted three times as many “out of stock” messages in July 2020, compared to the pre-pandemic period, while “out of stock” messages in January 2021 were at four times pre-pandemic levels.
