The India-DRC handshake

India seems interested to form an alliance with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for its diamond industry, according to reports. The DRC is presently the world’s fourth-largest diamond producer by volume. The Kimberly Process informs that in 2006, the central African nation produced 28.9 million carats worth $431.9 million.

In the meeting between The Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Kamal Nath, and a business delegation led by Endra-Philippe Futa of DRC, noted that in the cooperation, India would offer its expertise in diamond cutting & polishing and mining. Also, he noted that imports from the DRC were on the rise, while exports from India have come down since 2003-04.
