The Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair is an international gem and jewelry trading platform and offers a stage for Thai entrepreneurs, manufacturers, and designers to present the best gem and jewelry products to international markets in line with the government’s policy. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce of Thailand (Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit) has issued a measure to promote exports across all main industries by maintaining and expanding existing export markets, penetrating new markets, and reviving former markets that have shown potential for growth, amidst the ongoing trade wars and the volatility of the currency which have greatly affected the situation of international trade and investment. The gem and jewelry industry is one of the industries that have been the main focus of the Ministry of Commerce, as it generates a huge income for the country from exports while promoting value addition for numerous related businesses.

Meanwhile, Miss Banjongjitt Angsusingh, Director General of the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) revealed during the 64th Networking Reception that in 2018, the total export of gems and jewelry products (including gold) was the third highest among all industries in the country and was worth approximately 12 billion USD or 383,000 million baht. The industry has been immensely important to Thai people, creating jobs and income for communities, with over 1.2 million workers in this industry nationwide. Thus, the gem and jewelry industry has always been one of the key pillars of development for Thailand.

The 64th edition of the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair is held under the theme of Thailand’s Magic Hands: The Spirit of Jewelry Making that showcases the uniqueness of Thailand’s gems and jewelry products that have been made by talented craftspeople and the new generation of designers with creative ideas. These characteristics have been passed on through the generations of Thailand’s tradition of jewelry crafting and has propelled the country to become one of the world’s gems and jewelry trading and manufacturing hub, or the Jewelry Hub.

“There are more exhibitors, both large manufacturers and SMEs, joining the September show compared to the previous edition in February. Today, we have over 1,000 companies showcasing their products in 2,100 booths, including The New Faces exhibitors from across Thailand. DITP anticipates that the fair will attract over 20,000 visitors from 130 countries, generating 2.4 billion baht from business negotiations and help push gems and jewelry exports this year to reach +1%,” said Miss Banjongjitt.

The Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair is highlighting trends and presenting various trading opportunities, from The Niche Showcase, where jewelry targeting niche markets are featured; The Jewellers and the Innovation and Design Zone, highlighting products from designers with creativity and innovative techniques; seminars and workshops on interesting topics, such as the penetration of gem and jewelry products, luxury brand building in the digital era, and tips for the sustainable success of a major jewelry brand.

“During the first seven months of 2019 (January-July 2019) export of gem and jewelry products from Thailand was worth 9,026.55 million US dollars, or a 29.28% increase compared to the same period last year, with key export markets in Switzerland, Hong Kong, Singapore, US and India.

I believe that with the skills of experienced manufacturers and the creativity of the new generation of Thai designers, we can produce unique gem and jewelry products that will make Thailand stand out against other producers in the international market,” added Miss Banjongjitt.
