Sotheby’s sale of 20th Century British Art generates $7,389,896

At its Sale of 20th Century British Art, auction house Sotheby’s realized revenues worth $7,389,896. The sale set a new artist record at auction for Ceri Richards, achieved with her Interior with Piano, Woman and Child Painting (sold for: $427,954). Director of Kettle’s Yard, Michael Harrison said: “We are delighted with the results of the sale at Sotheby’s and are extremely grateful for the generosity shown by the artists who donated works, which were sought after in the auction room – it was thrilling to see Antony Gormley’s sculpture fetch a sum well in excess of its pre-sale estimate. We are very excited to be one step closer to embarking on the building of a new education wing, an expanded art library, a project gallery and proper collection store at Kettle’s Yard.”

The sale included a group of six works sold to benefit the Kettle’s Yard Development Appeal, each donated by artists and collectors, including Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst and Mona Hatoum.

The top 10 lots that sold at the auction included : Barry Flanagan, Boxing Hare on Anvil (sold for: $621,56), Antony Gormley, Stock (sold for $563,480), Patrick Caulfield, Cafe Interior: Afternoon (sold for: $505,398), Samuel Peploe, Still With Pink Roses in a Blue and White Vase with oranges and jug (sold for: : $505,398), John Piper, Painting (sold for: $427,954), Ceri Richards, Interior with Piano, Woman and Child Painting (sold for: $427,954). Some lots that achieved a record for the artists included- Christopher Wood, Reclining Nude (sold for: $427,954), Laurence Stephen Lowry, A Family of Six (sold for: $369,872), Christopher Wood, The Artist's Cottage, Paris (sold for: $253,707), Barbara Hepworth, Two Figures (Summer) (sold for: $244,027 USD).
