The global diamond manufacturing community is in mourning as it bids farewell to the legendary Sir Gabriel “Gabi” Tolkowsky, a pioneer and master craftsman who possessed an unparalleled understanding of the beauty and intricacies of diamonds. Recognised as a luminary in his field, Tolkowsky's exceptional professional achievements and milestones have left an indelible mark on the industry.
Gabi elevated the art of diamond cutting to new heights. Beyond his expertise in diamonds, he possessed a unique ability to connect with people, captivating them with his passion for the allure of these precious stones.
The Tolkowsky association with Indian companies in the diamond industry goes back several years. Tolkowsky had partnered with Laxmi Diamond to launch the exquisite 105-faceted Gabrielle Diamond in India in 2006.
Similarly, upscale jewellery retailer C. Krishniah Chetty & Sons (CKC) had unveiled the Tolkowsky diamond jewellery brand at its flagship Bengaluru store in 2008, in an exclusive partnership with the European diamond house that invented the Ideal Cut.
Those fortunate enough to have spent time in Gabi’s company will remember him for more than just his professional accolades. The International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) said that Gabi's warm personality and compassionate nature touched the lives of those who crossed his path, whether it was on the bustling streets of Antwerp's diamond quarter, during industry events, or in the earlier days, at trade shows. He possessed a genuine ability to engage in meaningful conversations and offer his undivided attention. Gabi Tolkowsky's vast knowledge and broad range of interests made for engaging exchanges that extended well beyond the world of gems.
His artistic sensibility and soulful nature allowed others to not only see the enchantment of a diamond but also to hear it. Through his groundbreaking research, Tolkowsky discovered that the reflection and refraction characteristics of diamonds could produce a unique sound pattern, unveiling the “song of a diamond”.
